Or do you not know, brethren, for I speak to those who know the law, that the law binds a man only as long as he lives? For a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives, but when her husband dies, she is freed from the law of marriage. As a result, she is called adultery if she lives with another man during her husband`s lifetime. But when her husband dies, she is freed from this law, and if she marries another man, she is not an adulterer. Likewise, my brethren, you too have died to the law through the Body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, the One who rose from the dead, so that we may bear fruit for God. For while we lived in the flesh, our sinful passions, awakened by the law, worked in our limbs to bear fruit unto death. Protestant churches have different levels of acceptance of divorce and remarriage. Many allow remarriage in the Church, at least under certain circumstances. Most do not impose sanctions on their divorced members who have remarried civilly. Anyone considering divorce or remarriage should inquire about their own church`s policies. Levirate was practiced in Old Testament times.
If a man died and left no male heir, his brother was to marry his widow and father (Deuteronomy 25:5-10). These and other forms of polygamy were acceptable in biblical times, although only wealthy men could afford multiple wives. King Solomon was the most outstanding polygamist with his 700 wives and 300 concubines. Marriage We affirm the sacredness of the marriage covenant, which is expressed in love, mutual support, personal commitment and shared fidelity between husband and wife. We believe that God`s blessing is based on such a marriage, whether or not there are children of the union. We reject social norms that set different standards for women and men in marriage. What I mean is that it was a common practice for there to be a celebration or ceremony for the wedding couple. We find this everywhere in the Old and New Testaments.
Moreover, it is found in all cultures throughout history. The ceremony seems to be part of the expectation of the wedding. The celebrations we find in Scripture often lasted for days (Matthew 22) and culminated in vows and blessings. Therefore, for a wedding to take place, it seems appropriate that there be a ceremony first. For in the resurrection they do not marry and are not married, but are like angels in heaven. 2) A couple is married in God`s eyes when they have completed some kind of formal wedding ceremony. Some interpreters understand that God brings Eve to Adam (Genesis 2:22) because God`s supervision of the first marriage ceremony reflects God`s actions in Eden. In John chapter 2, Jesus participates in a marriage ceremony. Jesus would not have participated in such an event if He had not approved of what happened. Jesus` participation in a marriage ceremony does not mean that God requires a marriage ceremony, but it does indicate that a marriage ceremony is acceptable in God`s eyes. Almost every culture in human history has witnessed some sort of official wedding ceremony. In every culture, there is an event, an act, a covenant or a proclamation that is so recognized that a man and a woman are married.
I know we have many young people in the church who might be deceived on this issue, as well as older people that we will look at three different scenarios to see what constitutes marriage after God. I was deceived many years ago, I thought that the lady I would make of my wife agreed in God`s eyes to live together and accomplish our purposes before the Lord. Please don`t allow anyone to make you believe that sex outside of legal marriage is acceptable, because it is NOT! The enemy will use this tactic that he used against me and I am sure against many others. Enjoy Bible study. We must strive every day to keep our marriages strong and not let them drift into divorce. We must put aside our anger, forgive our spouse a million times, always be faithful, suppress our pride and ego, and always let true Christian love guide our actions. Professional counseling can help resolve marital problems before the relationship deteriorates irreparably. However, this view has some weaknesses and potential problems. First, marriage existed before a government was organized. For thousands of years, people have married without anything like a marriage certificate. Second, even today, some countries do not have state recognition of marriage and/or have no legal requirements for marriage.
Third, some governments impose unbiblical requirements on marriage before it is legally recognized. For example, some countries require that a marriage be celebrated in a Catholic church according to Catholic doctrine and supervised by a Catholic priest.
